From Stress to Freedom: How We Turned a Quit Job Into a Full-Time Adventure

Updated: Dec 17

The truth is, my husband William hated his job. He was stressed, unfulfilled, and decided to quit. We had about six months of runway and figured we could embark on an epic adventure without needing to work. It would be family time, exploration, education, and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

We started with the idea that living on a sailboat would mean "Ultimate Freedom." Living in Maryland, we scored an old used sailboat at a great price. However, after testing the waters on a few big trips, we realized that sailboat life with a toddler is STRESSFUL. I decided it wasn’t for me, but I was open to van life or a truck camper.

We had experienced van life for short periods before and always felt the most free during those adventures. However, having a child now, we wanted something with a proper bathroom—a toilet that actually flushes. We didn’t want to lose the ability to access remote roads where most RVs can’t go. Finding the perfect rig was going to be a challenge.

While visiting Colorado, we found it—a 1999 Tioga that a guy named Zach had lifted and 4x4 converted. It was the most ridiculous thing we’d ever seen, and we knew right away it was "the one," even though we hadn’t initially planned on getting an RV.

It was relatively affordable for what it was but needed significant work. We bought it and spent all summer painting, redoing the unattractive interior, adding solar panels and rainwater catchment, fixing various issues, and generally making it livable. It took much longer than we wanted, but that’s often the case with these projects.

We set out on what we thought would be a six-month journey, starting in Colorado and then heading to Montana for friends' weddings we needed to attend before diving fully into our adventure.

Just a few weeks into the trip, William’s old friend and coworker reached out unexpectedly. He was starting a business and needed help. Having just quit his job, William had the time but wasn’t sure he wanted to start working again so soon. It turned out the new business was his dream job, and what better time to join an unpaid startup? To address connectivity issues, we bought a Starlink satellite system, which proved to be one of the best purchases we ever made!

Six months came and went. William started earning from the business, and we decided that living on the road was the life we wanted to continue. So here we are, still at it!
